No Name Calling Week
_Hello Northside Staff:
This week is No Name Calling Week. We will do a few things to raise awareness of the affects of bullying.
We will read a special announcement on the news each morning this week. The message will be read by the following people the students see daily:
Tuesday - Mr. Ricks (Introduction to No Name Calling Week)
Wednesday - Mr. Henderson, custodian
Thursday - Ms. Terry, cafeteria
Friday - Ms. Washington (Summary and conclusion of No Name Calling week)
In addition, I will give each staff member a button to wear each day advertising the No Name Calling Theme. My lessons this week will be about name-calling and bullying.
Finally, I would like for each class to develop a classroom no name-calling policy. Please work with students to outline rules and expectations about classroom language, calling attention to an agreement that students can make to refrain from name-calling and bullying. Refer to the classroom rules when name-calling or bullying occurs and ask students to remember that the classroom is a safe space for everyone. Please have students sign this policy and post it outside of your room. After this week, please post it in your class. If you need help with this, please let me know. (examples: bulletin board paper, posterboards, banners, etc). It is really important to have discussions from all students about this policy.
Thank you so much for your help in working toward a bully-free school!

students at Northside Elementary during Career Day on January 27, 2012.
Northside Elementary School held its annual Career Day on Friday, January 27, 2012. Students and staff participated in the event by dressing as their chosen career. Several students and staff took on the role of lawyers, preachers, doctors, nurses, professional athletes, teachers, and more.
The day began with a special visit from Northside Elementary alumni and University of North Carolina running back football coach Randy Jordan. Jordan made a special appearance on the school morning news show to talk about steps leading to his career. He offered words of encouragement to students and got everyone excited about the event. Jordan also visited classrooms and spoke with students.
Several other professionals made presentations to classes about their career. Students in Pre-kindergarten heard from Desmond Andrews, barber, and Angela Vaughan, educator. Laverne Jeffries, emergency medical technician, provided a tour of the ambulance and were allowed to test out the siren.
Kindergarten students had a special visit from Greg Champion, fireman, Sandra Pollock and the Fat Cat, from State Employees Credit Union, and Ernestine Moss, correctional officer. Students were allowed to sit in the fire truck and hold some of the tools used to extinguish fires.
Students in first grade heard from Dr. William Haight, dentist, who explained how he can detect cavities in our teeth and Melissa Kruger, Neonatal Intensive Care Registered Nurse, who talked about the bones in our body. Donald Ayscue, farmer brought a baby goat and a chicken to their class.
Second grade students heard from Elma Green, animal control director, Stanley Harrell, space expert, and Pamela Jordan, marketing teacher.
Mechelle Ragland, pastor, Keisha Carrawell, photographer, and Robby May, lawyer, visited students in third grade.
Fourth grade students had a visit from Alan Brickey, computer technician, Jenna Enoch, physician assistant, and Alecia Lakernick, dance teacher.
Students in fifth grade heard from Scott Brinkley, mechanic, Derrick Fogg, culinary arts teacher, and Mary Valentine, packing coordinator.
To wrap up Career Day, students attended a school-wide assembly to hear from guest speaker, Honorable Quon Bridges. Judge Bridges talked about the events that lead to his successful career and he provided encouragement to students to be the best they can be.
